Orthopedic mattresses are certainly nothing new; in fact, they have been around since the 1950s. However, one of the reasons why they are becoming more popular recently is because more and more people are having issues with their backs and other areas of the body—no thanks to the increasingly sedentary lifestyle and bad postures that are more prevalent in this internet age. Orthopedic mattresses are specialized types of mattresses that are intended to provide better support to the weight-bearing parts of the body, such as the neck, the back, the hips and the lower extremities. The orthopedic mattress is much firmer and denser than its conventional counterparts, and is generally constructed out of solid blocks of high-density foam. There are still some classic spring coil models being sold today, but the more innovative versions now use memory foam. Lying on an orthopedic mattress helps with back issues. As doctors recommend, firmer mattresses give better support to the back and the whole body because it does not allow the midsection to sink in. The lack of dipping in the middle of the sleeping surface places less stress on the base of the spine, which corresponds to the area of the lower back.
